Dickens’ holiday tale is Omaha tradition

There are many ways to introduce the Christmas season. Some people pick the perfect Christmas tree, some go caroling on Christmas Eve and some go shopping on Black Friday. Another way to go about it is by going to see a musical with people you are close to. Though there have been many movies about the Christmas season, and even many movie adaptions of “A Christmas Carol” is still teaches the importance of being a good and giving person.

A Christmas Carol” will be playing at the Omaha Community Playhouse Friday through Dec. 23. This show has been a Christmas tradition for 38 years now, giving families a place to bring their children, to begin their own traditions and to have something enjoyable to do for those who love Christmas.

“A Christmas Carol” is a classic tale of a grumpy old man who hates Christmas. Threedifferent ghosts appear to him and show him through experience that he needs to become a kinder man, and needs to appreciate the good of Christmas. Scrooge wakes up on Christmas morning a changed man, and treats everyone he meets with love and kindness. He becomes the epitome of the Christmas spirit.

Jerry Long is playing Scrooge and, according to director Carl Beck, has brought his “own unique gifts to the role, and is very successful.” Beck said he thinks it is wonderful that parents who came to see the show when they were little can now bring their own children to see it. “It is a family holiday event that is unequaled in our city,” said Long.

Arts & Sciences freshman Katie McClave has been going to see “A Christmas Carol” every Christmas Eve for as long as she can remember.

“I love it because it reminds me of Christmas,” McClave said. “When I watch it I remember that Christmas is about celebrating, laughing and being with your loved ones. It’s not just about money or presents.”

Many other people have this same tradition, and it helps to remind them of the true meaning of Christmas. Whether you have seen the show previously or not, it should be an event to put on your to do list for the holiday season. You will not be disappointed.
