Capitol Rows apartments, a new complex opening soon at 24th and Capitol streets, combines stainless steel kitchen appliances and decorator-selected accent walls – all right next to Creighton’s campus.
Capitol Rows, managed by America First Properties Management, is “just a few steps to Creighton University.” According to America First property manager Kevin McKeon, Capitol Rows was targeted to Creighton students for this reason.
“It was designed with Creighton in mind, but it is certainly open to the public,” McKeon said. “We didn’t just build
student housing.”
Capitol Rows’ one-bedroom apartments start at $829 a month, and two-bedrooms start at $1,200. Currently, all of the two-bedrooms are full, and there are 56 one-bedrooms available.
“It’s an expanded dorm experience,” said Kevin Hensel, Capitol Rows communication officer. “It’s a blending of downtown urban living with academic atmosphere.”
While the apartments are available for anyone, Hensel said he believes there is an advantage for Creighton seniors to live in Capitol Rows.
“It’s nice for their transition if they stay in the area or have a job in that area [after graduation],” Hensel said. “There is such a shortage of quality one-bedroom apartments in the area that people move further away for that quality. [Capitol Rows] will bring people closer to this area again.”
Arts & Sciences junior Amanda Burkey currently lives in Opus Hall but plans to move into Capitol Rows for her senior year.
“I am planning on moving into Capitol Rows because my parents want me on campus, but I had a hard time finding people who wanted to stay on campus or could afford it,” Burkey said. “Capitol Rows was a good choice because it’s right by Heider, so it’s basically on campus, and it’s also cheaper.”
Living in Opus or Davis halls on campus costs $639 a month, according to the 2010-11 Creighton room and board rates. McKeon said that some students are even renting out one-bedrooms in Capitol Rows for two people to save money. This would only cost each person about $415 a month, $224 cheaper than living in Opus or Davis.
“I love living in Opus; it’s safe and it’s great having my own room,” Burkey said. “Location-wise, I’d say Capitol Row is better, but I won’t have my own room, so that will be hard to adjust to after having my own room in Opus.”
McKeon insists that living in Capitol Rows is just as safe as living on Creighton’s campus. Capitol Rows has 24-hour surveillance, a well-lit walk from the apartments to campus at night and an emergency bluelight nearby, and all access points to building and parking are gated or electronically secured.
Some amenities are not included, however. For example, Capitol Rows provides washer and dryer access, but no washer and dryer units.
“The advantage [of Capitol Rows] is that students will get an apartment as opposed to a lottery,” McKeon said. “They have the peace of mind that they can reserve now, and [Creighton] students also have the opportunity to be the first people to live in Capitol Rows.”
Those renting out Capitol Rows will be able to move in this summer.
