On Tuesday night, the Arts & Sciences Faculty Senate voted unanimously to adopt two resolutions that will provide the basis for the new core, which should be ready for implementation for the 2014-15 accademic year.
The first resolution passed gives the senate authorization to begin the process of revising the core. The second resolution, which passed after an amendment was added to change some language, is concerned with the actual process of revision itself.
“Getting to this point, where we’ve passed resolutions to revise the core and a resolution adopting a process, represents the work of a lot of people for a very long period of time,” said Dr. Tracy Leavelle, president of the Faculty Senate.
The revision process will take five years. The timeline is as follows:
2010-11: create a long-term task force made up of Arts & Sciences faculty and students, as well as representatives from the Colleges of Business and Nursing and University College.
2011-12: develop a plan for the core based on the six learning goals set out by the college.
2012-13 and 2013-14: conduct a study on the course development and test pilot courses.
2014-15: implement the new core curriculum.
“We’re excited; we know it’s going to be a lot of work,” Leavelle said. “It’s certainly going to be a challenge, but we know it’s time. I think we’re ready to do it. We’re ready for the challenge.”
The Core Curriculum Task Force held a forum on April 8 in which Student Senate President Brian Carroll and Senator Hannah Mooney presented the results of the student and faculty surveys conducted earlier this semester. More than 800 students and 112 faculty participated.
“What we want to do is ... something that is distinctively Creighton’s curriculum,” Leavelle said. “Something that makes us stand out. Something that we can use to attract students and hopefully something they’ll find valuable while they’re here and certainly looking back when
they’re finished.”
