Letter: Recycling deserves more credit

I read the “Guest Voices” column by Matt Hanley, entitled “Letter: Recycling Program Still Needs More Work,” in The Creightonian with much interest.

Unfortunately, his letter does not give a complete picture of the efforts being undertaken. Single stream recycling is currently underway in several locations (including the residence halls, the Harper Center and the Wareham building) and will be rolled out across campus over the course of this semester.

I invite the Creighton community to take a look at the Creighton Sustainability Web site, www2.creighton.edu/about/sustainability/.

I think you’ll find that we are doing quite a bit to become more sustainable; enhanced recycling is just a small part of the overall efforts.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with the sustainability movement on campus, including the Sustainability Council, which meets the third Friday of every month in the Union Pacific Room. This group is open to students, faculty and staff.

Next month, we are hosting our Sustainability Navigator session, in which anyone that has an interest can make his or her voices heard and help determine the course Creighton will take with regard to sustainability initiatives. More information can be found on the Web site.

I’m glad there is such an interest in recycling and sustainability on campus.

I look forward to increased involvement from the community as we get our efforts and initiatives integrated into the daily operations of the university.
