The turnout at the first Creighton town hall meeting of the year was dismal. Only one Creighton student came to the meeting who was not a member of the IRHG, CSU or the Creightonian.
“I was disappointed because I was hoping for an open discussion, but that did not happen because no one was there. And I only knew about it through a friend on the Creightonian so it doesn’t surprise me nobody knew,” Tyler Kelley, Arts & Sciences Sophomore said.
A total of seven students were present and only one by choice because no one knew it was happening.
“I would have gone if I had known about it,” said Kylie Dunn, Arts & Sciences sophomore.
Jessica Luu, Arts & Sciences junior, voiced a similar opinion.
“I would go if I knew other people were going. I definitely have an interest and would like to go if a friend would go with me,” Luu said.
At the town hall meeting, Wes Elliott, Dining Services General Manager, Kathleen Michaela, and the executive manager of Brandeis Dining Hall spoke about changes in food service, where it is going and how students can give input.
Also discussed was the Creighton Savings Union, a new way to help students save around town.
“The purpose of the Creighton Town Hall meetings is to provide a valuable and previously unavailable service to Creighton students,” Adam Hare, CSU President said. “Students should come to Creighton Town Hall meetings because it is your chance to voice your concerns and issues.”
Organizers have high hopes for future meeting attendance.
“To generate more participation at this meeting, we will advertise better, target student organizations more effectively, and spread the word plenty of time before the meeting, which takes place on the first Wednesday of each month,” Hare said.
IRHG and CSU collaborate on the town hall meetings, providing connections between the students and the administration so students can be heard. On the agenda for the October meeting are the tobacco policy and the CSU restructuring.
