The last time the Bluejays faced Florida A&M it was 1993 and Creighton called the As-Kar-Ben Coliseum home. In that game, the Bluejays beat the Rattlers 74-70, their last at Ak-Sar-Ben.
On Tuesday night, Creighton won by 25 points, 78-53, at their current home court at Qwest Center-Omaha to move to 2-0 all-time against Florida A&M and 81-11 in home openers.
Creighton improved to 1-1 on the year, while Florida A&M fell to 0-2.
Four players landed in double figures for the Bluejays, led by 17 points from Junior guard Darryl Ashford. Freshman forward Ethan Wragge had 16 points off the bench. Also scoring in double-digits was Junior center Kenny Lawson with 11 points and Senior guard Cavel Witter with 10 points. Junior forward Wayne Runnels led the Bluejays with nine rebounds for the second game in a row.
Creighton finished by making 11 three-point baskets in 31 attempts from beyond the arc.
Creighton shot 43.8 percent from the floor while Florida A&M shot 32.1 percent.
The Bluejays also recorded 23 defensive rebounds to compliment four blocks and 12 steals.
“I thought our ball movement at times was pretty good offensively,” Creighton head coach Dana Altman said. “Again, at times defensively we had some really good possesions but it didn’t seem that we put them on top of each other and the consistency wasn’t there.”
The Bluejays got a scare in the second half when Antoine Young went down with a knee injury.
“He just bumped his knee,” Altman said. “It was the same knee he had twisted in practice.”
Altman also said that he fully expects Young to play in the next game against Arkansas-Little Rock.
Florida A&M was lead by Rasheem Jenkins who netted 13 points, while Dale Hughes and Brandon Bryant each had 10 points.
The Rattlers finished with 29 turnovers, 9 more than the Bluejays’ 20.
Florida A&M outrebounded Creighton 41-37 for the game, led by Yannick Crowder and Christopher Walker who each finished with 9.
The Bluejays stay on their home court Sunday when the Trojans of Arkansas-Little Rock come to Qwest Center-Omaha. Tip-off is set for 2:05pm.
