IRHG to ‘give more power to the students’

A new set of faces will soon join the Inter Resident Hall Government following Thursday’s hall elections for president, vice president, service, faith, justice ambassador and senator. This year’s elections were held later in the month than in previous years.

“Elections are being held later this year in hopes that more people will be aware of elections by the time they come around and more aware of what IRHG is as an organization,” said Nursing sophomore Allison Hinderman, the diversity and leadership chair of IRHG.

IRHG set up a booth at the Fall Involvement Fair to better educate students about the organization.

In addition to the new election time, several other changes are under way for IRHG. This year marks the beginning of the new committee system, in which members will focus on specific topics including sustainability, dining, campus safety and parking and policy review. The committee groups are aimed at helping expand IRHG’s influence and effectiveness on campus.

IRHG is also taking an active role in helping plan the proposed new sophomore residence hall for Creighton’s campus. IRHG and Residence Life have worked together to help design the new hall’s layout and voice student concerns.

“We wanted to include a lot of student input as the process of construction starts,” said Arts & Sciences junior Nick Stukel, president of IRHG. “We want to give more power to the students.”

IRHG plans to meet with administrators to create legislation to improve the Creighton campus. It also hopes to expand hall outreach by working closely with halls’ Resident Advisers and Resident Directors.

IRHG’s calendar is packed full this year with various upcoming events. On Sept. 21-22, IRHG will host a poster sale from 9 a.m-5 p.m. on the Skinner Mall. Students can stop by and pick up dorm posters of their favorite movies, musicians and celebrities. IRHG is also busy preparing for its 25th anniversary celebration. On Oct. 2, during Alumni weekend, IRHG founder Steven Conroy will speak at Irma’s Bistro in commemoration of IRHG’s creation.

Other upcoming IRHG events include the Go Light Your World Ceremony on Oct. 3, when residents can walk from their halls to the fountain outside St. John’s for a special Mass. IRHG will also be planning the Getting Blue BBQ on Oct. 9 during

Homecoming Week.

Students still interested in joining IRHG can run for floor representative in late September. Elections for executive positions will take place in the spring of 2011.
