People from every corner of campus are going to miss seeing the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J., walking around Creighton.
Howard Russell, of custodial services in the Kiewit Fitness Center, has seen him every day for three years.
Russell and Schlegel have been friends since Russell came to Creighton. Russell said he wanted to show his deep gratitude to Schlegel for the relationship they have had by doing something special for him.
Friday morning Russell surprised Schlegel by presenting him with pictures that Russell’s son had drawn of Russell, Schlegel and Creighton’s campus. Along with the pictures there was a letter honoring the president.
“Every morning before or after his workout, Father Schlegel and I would greet with a closed fist bump and elbow with love tap,” the letter read. “That became our signature greeting to one another.”
Russell also said he has seen that Schlegel really is a good man and that he truly cares about the people at Creighton.
“He interacts with the students and faculty and shares his wisdom freely with all he comes in contact with,” Russell wrote. “He is a man of position and rank within the school, but he made others feel a level of equality, that they had purpose and a voice that needs to be heard.”
Schlegel said the presentation really touched him.
“Things like this are part of what makes Creighton so special,” Schlegel said. “Everybody respects each other, regardless of their part on campus.”
Schlegel said he sees students treating Russell and the other workers with the same respect he does.
“I think our students really appreciate what they do and treat them well and as equals and know the importance of saying ‘thank you,'” Schlegel said.
In his letter, Russell made a point of thanking Schlegel for taking the time to talk to him, to get to know him and help him.
“You have been a selfless example and share your time with people from all walks of life and circumstances,” Russell said. “You have given me words of wisdom and have helped uplift my faith and the faith of others.”
Most of all, Russell wanted Schlegel to know how much everyone will miss him.
“I just want to tell you that you will be deeply missed here at Creighton University by everyone, and I want to wish you the very best wherever your journeys may take you.”
