The Creighton volleyball team went to Saint Louis University to take part in the Marcia E. Hamilton Active Ankle Challenge this weekend. Friday night, the women swept reigning A-10 champion St. Louis University 3-0. Leading the way for the Jays were senior Alicia Runge’s 15 kills and five blocks and junior Megan Bober’s 37 assists.
Saturday’s games were up and down for the Jays. The team took on Iowa in the morning and lost in five games. The Jays came back from being down 0-2 to take the Hawkeyes to a fifth set, eventually losing 18-20 in the deciding set. The Jays were once again led by 26 kills from Runge and 43 assists by Bober from the front row with the help of Nayka Benitez’s 27 digs in the back row.
“We came out ready to play SLU on Friday, and then Saturday morning we got off to a slow start going down 0-2 to Iowa,” said junior middle blocker Laurel Sanford. “We picked it up after the break and fought hard to finish in five sets.”
Later on Saturday, the Jays took on Wake Forest and ended their day – and tournament – with a 3-0 sweep of the Demon Deacons. Runge led the way from the front row with four others adding six kills. Benitez and Brooke Boggs controlled the defense with 16 and 11 digs, respectively. Iowa won the tournament, while both Runge and Bober were named to the All-Tournament team. The Jays play again this weekend at Marquette in Milwaukee.
“We played well and hope to go into this weekend ready to play strong every point,” Sanford said.
