Women’s volleyball improves to 5-1 in conference play

A week after Northern Iowa came into the D.J. Sokol Arena and handed the Creighton women’s volleyball team its first conference loss, Creighton has gone on to win its last three matches in convincing fashion, keeping its hold on second place overall in the Valley.

With the help of junior setter Megan Bober and junior middleblocker Laurel Sanford, who were named MVC Player of the Week and MVC Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, Creighton has shown that when the players are all playing together, they can be an intimidating group.

Oct. 1 the Jays traveled to Illinois State University where they won 3-1. In game one, the Jays got off to a slow start and never recovered, falling to Illinois State 20-25. Games two and three were a reversal from the first, with the Jays

jumping out to a quick lead and never losing it, resulting in a 25-17 and 25-19 win, respectively.

“I thought we started really slow and then made some decent runs to get momentum late in game one,” head coach Kirsten Booth said in a press release. “I liked how we rebounded in the second game and kept that up despite some

lulls late in the third and fourth games to get the win.”

Game four was much closer, ending 25-23, but like the previous two, it was controlled by the Jays. Offensively, senior outside hitter Allie Oelke led the Jays with 18 kills, while both Sanford and senior outside hitter Alicia Runge

added 10 each.

Defensively, freshman defensive specialist Julianne Mandolfo led Creighton with 29 digs – a new career high – while Oelke had 16 more.

Saturday the Jays took on Indiana State University and swept it 3-0 for their sixth straight road win. Game one was the closest of the three games; the Jays won 25-22.

In games two and three the Jays’ blocking took off with Bober and Sanford, and they won 25-10 and 25-7. Sanford led the Jays with 11 total blocks while Bober added eight more.

Offensively, Bober and Sanford led with nine and 10 kills, respectively. In the back row, Oelke and Mandolfo led with 12 digs each, while senior defensive specialist Nayka Benitez and sophomore defensive specialist Brooke Boggs both added 11.

“We served great and took them out of system and that was key,” Booth said in a press release. “Laurel and Megan were a wall tonight and did a nice job blocking.”

The Jays are back in Omaha this weekend with games against Missouri State University and Witchita State University.
