Homecoming Week 2011 — with the theme “Creighton Goes Back to the Future” — featured many fun events and ways for students to get involved, all garnering Creighton pride.
On Sept. 22, the Bluejays celebrated “Jays On Parade.” Sororities, residence halls, and other organizations such as the Gender Sexuality Alliance and Catholic Student Organization decorated large, wooden cutouts of the letters “C” and “U.” These intricately designed cutouts were then displayed in the Kiewit Fitness Center Spine along the balcony. The letters took the place of the traditional golf cart parade and will be left all around campus for everyone to enjoy.
The women’s soccer team hosted the University of Northern Iowa on Sept. 23 and clenched a 1-o victory; the team is now 5-4-2.
“I love going to Creighton soccer games,” Nursing freshman Amber Foley said. “There is always a great atmosphere. It was cool seeing alumni come back this weekend for homecoming to support the team.”
“Jays in the Dark” was a new event this year that involved students in fun, nighttime activities designed to take the place of the usual semi-formal dance. It included a screening of the film “Back to the Future.”
“Overall, the event was a success,” Business junior Matt Novotny said. “Many students stopped by for a bounce, some root beer or candy.”
On Sept. 24, Creighton celebrated its annual homecoming game with the No. 3 men’s soccer team playing St. Mary’s College. The men won 1-0.
“Since it was the homecoming game the stands were full of fans and it was really exciting,” Arts & Sciences freshman Anna Jo Cowan said. “I was there for halftime. The dance was pretty good by our dance team and the hamster ball race was hilarious.”
During halftime of the men’s game, Arts & Sciences senior Eric Wilkerson won homecoming king, and Arts & Sciences senior Tana Lukes was crowned homecoming queen.
“The four other gentlemen standing next to me are incredible and deserve this honor as much as I do, so it was flattering to know that I was chosen,” Wilkerson said.
Overall, the week offered events of all sorts, with a little bit of something for everyone.
