Lady Jays struggle but stay strong

The Creighton women’s soccer team earned its first conference victory over the University of Northern Iowa on Sept. 23 — the team’s second straight win. The homecoming game proved to be a battle as both teams struggled to get a goal in the first half. The Jays outshot the Panthers 6-5 as the first half ended in a stalemate.

Motivated by the cheers of fans, the Jays came out strong in the second half. The first and only goal of the game came at 66:19 by way of freshman midfielder Shonna Fraser’s first career goal. Off a cleared corner, junior forward Brittney Neumann advanced the ball to Fraser, who scored a quick

turn goal.

“Today was a grind-it-out victory,” head coach Bruce Erickson said. “I thought we created enough chances to possibly score three or four goals, but we will take the goal we got.  I thought we played well; it wasn’t a game where UNI was giving us a lot of chances to get behind. We really had to work for everything.  All in all I was pleased with it. We are continuing

to play better.”

The women’s second game of the weekend was against the University of Wyoming Cowboys.

The game proved difficult for the Jays as the Cowboys dominated from the start. Although Wyoming outshot Creighton 10-2 in the first half, both teams headed into the locker room scoreless.

Wyoming continued to control the game in the second half as the Jays struggled to get a shot off. The Cowboys outshot the Jays 11-1 in the second half, but behind a solid performance of senior goalie Alicia Montgomery, the game went into overtime scoreless.

The Jays continued to battle as they sent the game into overtime and then double overtime. After 110 minutes the game ended in a 0-0 tie.The Bluejays were outshot by Wyoming 25-6 in the game.

Creighton was led by Montgomery who recorded 13 saves — the second most in Creighton’s history. The game marked the Creighton women’s soccer team’s third straight shutout. The Jays now move to 5-4-1 on the season.

Creighton continues conference play on Saturday, at the University of Evansville.
