McGloin block party deemed ‘sweet’

Students’ minds were flooded with childhood memories when they walked into this year’s annual McGloin Block Party.

The event, which was held March 23, honored the childhood board game β€œCandyland.” Inter Residence Hall Government and the McGloin Hall Residence Council made fictional places such as the ‘Gumdrop Mountians’ and the ‘Lollipop Forest’ come to life.

Over 600 people attended the block party, which had a buffet-style dinner and five floors of different candy and desserts. The Block party closed down all the dining halls on campus. With sunny weather and music playing, students could get dinner from a buffet before moving inside to the dessert portion of the evening.

Nursing sophomore Dana Fuelberth, the current president of McGloin Hall, said that this event was the fruition of many months of hard work.

β€œWe started planning this event as soon as school started up again in January,” Fuelberth said.

Despite all the hard work, McGloin’s Residence Hall Council did not put on this event alone.

β€œThe nine RA’s within McGloin were a vital asset to the success of the event,” Fuelberth said. β€œCandyland was sponsored by IRHG, CSU, Sophomore Programming and the Department of Residence Life … Sodexo was a huge help in the planning process as well.”

The event coincided perfectly with Big Jays, Little Jays weekend, where students could bring their younger siblings to spend a weekend at Creighton. Arts & Sciences sophomore Melanie Stara thoroughly enjoyed the block party. Her nine-year-old brother, Paul, also attended as a β€˜Little Jay.’

β€œThe McGloin block party was great,” Stara said. β€œWhat ‘Little Jay’ doesn’t love lots of candy? It was a great way to spend Friday evening with my little brother. Paul really enjoyed the entire block party.”

This event, which was deemed a success by Fuelberth, was definitelyΒ  β€˜sweet’ for Creighton students.
