This year, Creighton University has the honor of hosting the Frank J. Menolascino MD Memorial Lecture on Thursday, November 15. The lecture is presented in memory of Frank Menolascino, MD, a beloved chair holder of psychiatry at UNMC. Menolascino had many respected accomplishments; among them, gathering attention to the care of persons with mental disabilities. The lecture, entitled “Autism: The Intersection of Psychiatric and Developmental Disorders: Déjà vu All Over Again”, will be given by Mr. Brian H. King, MD, a Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Seattle Children’s Autism Center. Dr. King specializes in Autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders, such as treatment of behavioral patterns in Autism. Dr. King’s lecture will consist of findings about the increased rates of children born with autistic disorders. The lecture will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Harper Center Auditorium and is free and open to the public. A welcoming reception will begin at 11:45 a.m.
After the noon lecture, there will be other presentations held, including a keynote lecture by Bruce Mason JD. Atty. Mason, a supporter for civil rights and a believer in social justice. Atty. Mason worked with Dr. Frank Menoliscino in their work here in Nebraska to endorse fair rights for the mentally disabled community. This work will be remembered at this event.
Atty Mason’s lecture will be followed by an expert panel, which will focus on current and future goals for the care and concern of people with Autism. This panel will include Mark Fleisher MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Neurodevelopmental Psychiatry Services at UNMC, Robert Fletcher DSW and CEO of the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed, and Dr. King.
The event is sponsored by the FJ Menolascino Foundation, Creighton University School of Medicine, and the Owen Foundation, along with additional support from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska, and the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed and Disability Rights Nebraska.
