Out of Bounds: End of the Semester Grab Bag

While most of us were preparing for finals and gettingΒ photo bombedΒ by Ethan Wragge, Creighton was making headlines for a variety of reasons. One of the reasons we did not make headlines, however, was the terrible attendance at the Akron game.

Seriously, I woke up later than I wanted to and arrived at the stadium only 20 minutes before tip off. Do you know where I sat? In the second row, with empty seats to my left. It was absolutely pathetic.

What studying could you have lost for just two hours on a Sunday afternoon? Even worse, the game was recorded.Β Although IΒ applaudΒ the tricky camerawork used to hide our numbers, the result is stillΒ embarrassing.

Also, the people who missed the game missed out on a standing ovation for Josh Jones. If you care more about studying than Josh Jones, you are a terrible person.

Speaking of Josh, the #legend held a press conference on Wednesday to let everyone know his status going forward. While Jones won’t know whether he’s getting back onto the court until late January, he doesn’t need to worry about that.

The most important thing for Josh will be getting healthy. The team can rally around him, the student body can rally around him if they stop studying for two seconds, heck, I even rallied around him to finish my graphic design project. Josh doesn’t have to worry about any of that. Unless, of course, if he hasn’t finished that project, because it takes longer than one would think.

Just concentrate on your health, Josh, and the rest of the extended Creighton family will embrace whatever decision you have to make in a month. Injury will never impact team legend status.

The final bit of news involves conference realignment. Seven schools from the Big EastΒ have decided to break away from what used to be the best basketball conference and start a new league. These schools are being awesomely dubbed “The Catholic 7.” I have no idea what kind of schools would want to join a conference full of Catholic schools with basketball-first athletic departments.

Oh wait, that sounds perfect for Creighton. So far, it looks like Xavier and Butler are alreadyΒ committedΒ toΒ joining. From early reports, it seems like what happens next depends onΒ whetherΒ The Catholic 7 want a 10-team or 12-team league. Let’s forget about the 10-team option because that scares me too much.

The 12-team option would be perfect. If the conference adds Creighton, Saint Louis University, and the University of Dayton, they will have 12 teams with a very good six team East/West split. Creighton’s hypothetical division would include Dayton, SLU, Marquette, DePaul and Butler. The other division would be Xavier, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, Villanova and St. John’s.

This seems like the perfect option for our school to continue to worship both basketball and Jesus. But wait, there’s more! This conference would also be great at soccer. Plenty of the schools I mentioned are in the top 100 in soccer RPI.

What I’m saying is that this move would only be positive in terms of competition and TV money. If you see Fr. Lannon in the near future, you know what to talk to him about.
