There have been many incidents that have caused people to reconsider gun usage, but since tragic events like the Aurora, Colo., theater shooting last summer and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December, the reporting of shootings have been more prominent. Gun violence, especially in schools, has been mentioned frequently and it is shocking to hear because of the enormity of what it means.
Hearing about more incidents demonstrates how the use of guns and keeping them out of the hands of people who should not have them is the issue that is being constantly addressed.
The violence in schools, though, is a really huge problem because no matter where people live, there needs to be a solution to minimizing how many young people get their hands on guns.
Although I know people need guns to protect themselves, they shouldn’t have to have a lot of them and be where their kids can just take them. For that reason, people get guns because they know that others out there have them and could potentially harm them.
Arts & Sciences senior Savannah Hobbs, who heard about there being bans on guns, wished she owned one.
βI feel that my window of opportunity to buy a gun is closing and that I must act quickly,” Hobbs said. “I believe that the constant reports of violence in schools stems from an unhealthy mentality about violence and about life. My true fear comes in that by blaming guns for what we as a society are doing wrong, we will fail to acknowledge the deeper unhealthiness that runs throughout our culture.β
The regulation of guns needs to be taken seriously, so that events like these don’t happen. Being in college it is still an issue because gun violence has happened on campuses across the nation.
Jacky Lee a junior at Creighton had not really thought about it before until now.
βI guess Iβm just shocked to hear that violence has become so common and I feel like as Americans, we arenβt really doing anything about it,” Lee said.
The issue with guns can only go so far, because the people need to change and understand what the purpose of guns are for and what ways they are acceptable. Guns should not be in the hands of people at such young ages and should not be seen as the way to solve problems every time.
Our society needs to find ways to reach out to others in order to demonstrate that we can be better and feel a lot safer if they know what is at stake and is in the best interest to all.
Arts & Sciences senior Tayler Davis said she thinks it is really sad.
βThere has been 31 school shootings since Columbine High School in 1999 and three of those this past year,” Davis said. “I don’t understand why it has taken this long, for it to lead to the death of children, for someone to fix the gun legislation to take away military grade weapons from civilians and to do background checks.β
The fact that people would walk into a store and be able to have their pick of any semi-automatic weapon, numerous bullets and just walk out with no one questioning them is terrifying.
She, like those who are tired of these tragic events, is glad that the nation is finally doing something about gun control to at least limit the amount of deaths per year.
All the violence that has occurred goes to show how much needs to be done in order to stop guns being used by people in the wrong ways. Seeing the news about school shootings especially is what makes it even worse. They should be in places where people will not be able to access them easily unless needed to. By controlling who and how much people get will prevent others from being in those situations.
