Technology Takeover

Tinder, Swoon, CU Confessions, CU Crushes and so on.

Technology has taken over college dating. Utilizing technology to spice up one’s love life hasn’t been a reality for most college students until now. With everything mentioned above and more, the possibilities are endless.

Tinder and Swoon are simple and easy dating apps where one can sit back and anonymously β€œswipe” to explore who is nearby. These apps access your Facebook and use your age, location and interests to find you a potential match without posting anything to your Facebook. Users are only notified if a match is made and then you are able to chat.

Taking on the other side of online love, CU Confessions and CU Crushes are just a few of the pages that have been created. These pages are where you can anonymously submit posts via a survey monkey about who you have a crush on. The posts on these pages range from inanimate objects such as loving yoga and baseball pants to being head over heels with the common campus hotties.

It may to be way easier to profess your everlasting love to the entire tennis team over a Facebook page than to do it in person, but is it really proving anything? If you remain anonymous how will they ever know that you like them?

Every time I would come home and whine to my mom about why β€œHot Ryan” never looked my way twice in high school – even though my class only had 13 kids – my mom gave me the same piece of advice.

Man up. Ask him out yourself. Go for gold.

I, of course, responded with an β€œOh my god Mom! No! That would be absolutely mortifying! What if he said no?! I have to see him every day! There are only 13 of us!”

Now I will never know what β€œHot Ryan” and I could have been and I will longingly look at him from afar at alumni events for the rest of my life.

While technology may be the easier way and keep you from getting hurt, keeping quiet or posting anonymously will never amount to anything unless you take the initiative and put yourself out there.
