Family Weekend involves a lot of βmeeting the parentsβ whether they are your friendβs parents or significant otherβs.Β First impressions really do last a lifetime.Β The first time I met one of my boyfriendβs parents, I was absolutely terrified.Β I had spent the week prior having my parentβs give ` do and donβt tips to keep from embarrassing myself.Β I survived and did not make a complete fool out of myself and Iβm going to let you in on their secrets to success when it comes to meeting the parents.
To avoid a βGreg Focker Meet The Parentsβ nightmare you first need to relax.Β Take a chill pill because chances are his or her parents are going to like you simply because their son or daughter does.Β Avoid the deer in the headlights expression because if you look too scared or nervous, you can send the wrong vibes.Β You donβt want them thinking you are stuck up or have something to hide.Β Remember to be confident but not cocky.
Next, you need to dress nicely.Β A suit or dress is not in order, but try to avoid looking like you just rolled out of bed.
If you are unsure of what to wear, ask your significant other in what type of setting you will be meeting them.Β All you need to do is look well-groomed and
put together.
Being helpful and using proper etiquette are musts.Β Helping clear the table or drying the dishes can go a long way.Β Small and simple acts of genuine kindness are what all parents love to see in their childβs significant other.Β Check with your significant other about what his or her parents prefer to be called (such as: by their first names or Mr. and Mrs.) and never cuss or use vulgar language.Β Use your manners and say please and thank you and remember your table manners and to sit up straight. Now I sound like my grandmother.
Here are some things not to do. The biggest no-no is to not drink too much.Β I realize that you may be nervous and need a bit of liquid courage to get by but you may say something that you will regret.Β Also, stay away from politics and sensitive subjects. We all know a good debate can be fun, but it can turn ugly very quickly.Β Make sure to avoid excessive PDA.Β Holding hands and a hug or two are perfectly okay, but the rest can wait until you know their parents better.Β It is very important to show the parents that you treat their son or daughter well.Β Men, be sure to open the doors and pull out
the chairs.
Next you need to educate yourself.Β Ask your significant other if there are any special rules or customs you need to follow. I can almost guarantee you that you are going to be practically interviewed.Β Be prepared to answer the difficult questions, such as your future, commitment to their son or daughter, and your background.Β Do you best to answer their questions in appropriate length, avoid the simple βyes,β βno,β or βI donβt knowβ answers.Β I recommend practicing these questions prior so the cat doesnβt get your tongue.
Follow these simple tips and their parents will like you just as much as your significant other likes you.Β In the end just be yourself and if you happen to screw up you have a legitimate excuse that you are extremely nervous and want to make a great first impression.
