On Sunday the Kiewitt Fitness Center was closed for a few hours after a pipe burst in the womenβs locker room.Β
Students received an email from Campus Recreation just before 10 a.m. saying that βthe KFC will be closed indefinitely today due to a pipe that burst in the KFC last night. Once the pipe is repaired weβll communicate when the KFC will reopen.β The Rasmussen Center remained open.
David Martins, a Public Safety officer, was one of two officers to respond to the call.Β
βWe got a call about 7 oβclock Sunday morning and the officer that was on that day, besides me, was Officer Rivera,β Martins said. βHe responded, went over there and found David White, who is a KFC employee, cleaning with the Shop-Vac, trying to get the water swept up.Β
βThere was about two inches of water on the floor in the womenβs locker room,β Martins said. βIt was from an overheard burst pipe. The drains were not able to keep up with the flow.β
Representatives from facilities turned off the water in the entire building, resulting in the KFC closing indefinitely. Repairs to the pipe were made later that day. The KFC reopened at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon after the area had been cleaned.
Bob Denney, director of Campus Recreation at the KFC, said there was no permanent damage caused by the burst pipe.Β
β[The water] didnβt run out on the courts, it didnβt damage anybodyβs stuff in the lockers,β Denney said. βIt just took a while to get someone to come out, replace the valve, repair the pipe, and we were back open by
3 oβclock.β
