The No. 22 Creighton women’s basketball team led for over 38 minutes as it dominated Butler 89-53 at D.J. Sokol Arena on Jan. 10.
The Jays controlled the first quarter, taking an 18-11 lead into the second quarter. Butler came out strong in the second, hitting back-to-back threes to bring the game within one and forcing Creighton head coach Jim Flanery to call a timeout, but that was the last sign of life the Bulldogs had throughout the night.
The Jays outscored the Bulldogs 19-8 in the remaining nine minutes of the quarter and began to lay it on after halftime as the Jays found their shot. After shooting 3-8 from deep in the first half, well below the Jays’ season average for attempts, Creighton hit nine of its 15 threes in the second half, led by two apiece from senior guards Lauren Jensen and Jayme Horan in the half.
“[Horan] makes shots in practice, she just hadn’t made them in games,” Flanery said. “As a staff, we said ‘She’s shooting it too well in practice to shoot it where she is in games,’ and it went in for her tonight.”
Following the short lapse at the beginning of the second quarter, Creighton’s defense successfully ran Butler’s perimeter players off the three point line, holding the Bulldogs, who averaged 23.6 three point attempts per game before Wednesday’s matchup, to just 14 attempts from beyond the arc.
“[Butler] makes nine threes per game, they make seven free throws per game, so you better take away shots and make them put the ball on the floor,” Flanery said.
Senior forward Emma Ronsiek led the Jays in scoring with 25 points on 14 points, while fellow senior forward Mallory Brake registered a career-high 12 points on the night.
Creighton will return to D.J. Sokol on Sunday at 1 p.m. to conclude its two-game homestand against the Providence Friars.
