Men’s soccer shuts out UNCG

The men’s soccer team displayed an impressive performance over University North Carolina Greensboro in a home opener at Morrison Stadium Saturday night.

The Jay’s jumped out to a early lead when Ethan Finlay scored his first goal on a penalty kick in the ninth minute of the game. Minutes later, Josh Moran headed one in for the Jay’s off the assist from Kyle Deremer, who contributed two assists in the victory.

In the 33rd minute of the match, Finlay scored again off of the assist from Jose Gomez and Kyle Deremer. The Jay’s entered halftime with a 3-0 lead over the Spartans and would score once more in the second half on a goal by Kris Clark.

The Jays’ defense was flawless as they shut out the Spartans in the route to their second win of the season.

“We played well offensively, but our defense was very important because we like to play complete games and not leave games to chance,” said goalie Bryan Hoie.

The Jay’s improved to 2-0-0 to start the season but aren’t looking too far down the road.

“We are taking the season one game at a time. It’s great to be off to a 2-0 start, but we can improve on everything still because it is early in the season”, Hoie said.

The Bluejay’s next match will be Tuesday at UC Santa Barbara against the Gauchos, who are 0-1 to start the season.
