Creighton volleyball sweeps Drake

The Creighton Volleyball team swept Drake 3-0 Friday en route to earning their first conference win of the year, while also improving to 5-6 overall.  The Friday match was a part of the inaugural Creighton Classic, which UAB and McNeese State are also competing in.

Creighton’s defense played well throughout the match, with 28 digs in the first set and 28 in the second to compile 69 digs overall.  Sophomore defensive specialist Julianne Mandolfo had 10 digs in each of the first two setsto go along with the stellar play of the entire Jays defense.

Despite their 14 serving errors, Creighton finished with 52 kills, 69 digs, five blocks and three aces while hitting .299 for the match.  Senior Laurel Sanford had 14 kills on .565 hitting, and junior setter Megan Bober had Creighton’s first triple-double in a home match since 1994 as she finished with 12 kills on .417 hitting along with 20 assists and 18 digs.  Bober’s 18 digs were a career high and her triple-double the second of the season, making her the first player in Creighton history to have two triple-doubles in one season.

Creighton’s 69 digs were their high for a season in a three-set match, destroying the previous high of 46 against Northern Illinois.  Defense was a central theme for the Jays all night, but their serving errors and offense will have to continue to improve.

The Creighton Classic continued on Saturday with Drake falling to UAB in opening play the Ryan Center at 10 a.m. while Creighton defeated McNeese State in their match at noon.  Later in the afternon, McNeese State lost to Drake, who ended up third overall in the tournament. UAB took the Creighton Classic title on Saturday night in the nightcap game of the tournament against Creighton at 7:30 p.m. where the Jays lost in four sets.  The women’s volleyball team is on the road next weekend with a match against Evansville on Friday, September 23rd.
