What if… Marvel’s “Avengers” never came to be? What would the Avengers look like in another timeline? What if there was no Captain America? What if Star Lord wasn’t Peter Quill? What if Doctor Strange turned evil? What if…?

Disney Plus released the Marvel Studios animated series “What If…?” on Aug. 11, 2021, which will be premiering every week on Wednesdays until Oct. 6, 2021.

This show possesses what is called a cel-shading animation. Similar to the making of “Into the Spider-Verse,” this production renders 3D entities into a more 2D form of cartoon. Although not unusual for Marvel’s works, this style of animated liveliness sure is a spectacle.

As the multiverses expand the timelines are altering, and everything in between is absurdly shifting. This show briefly journeys along the vast galaxies in which the Marvel Cinematic Universe produces, whether they be drastically different, or be similar variations to the world we’re used to.

This production virtually theorizes what would happen if one step or detail changed during the recruitment of the Avengers.

Staying true to the original Marvel movies, this animated show edits the origins and unravels a brand-new storyline that deviates from what Marvel fans are used to. Agonizingly, each episode ends with a cliffhanger, leaving the audience to ponder the question of what could possibly happen next.

The episodes so far have been touching to watch; some were a little horrifying while others were thrilling. It becomes difficult to watch when the audience witnesses their beloved heroes succumb to different kinds of heartbreaking hardships.

Dramatic irony runs prevalent throughout each adventure. Rage-inducing for the watchers, deceit and frustrations sting not just the characters but the fans as well.

The writing purposefully curves the watchers through the dramatic and epic moments. Unexpectedly weaving within the uphill and downhill battles, this series does not shy away from keeping its audience on the edge of their seats.

Episode two, “What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord?” was a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, also known as the Black Panther. What If…? was reportedly the last project that Boseman had done with Marvel. His character, T’Challa, can be seen spreading love and wisdom through the last production of him talking in his prominent Wakandan accent.

Most of the characters we recognize from the movies appear reprising their role as voice actors. Memorable actors return such as Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Paul Bettany as Vision, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and many more.

Marvel’s recent releases to Disney Plus started with “WandaVision” and have expanded to “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” and now, “What If…?” After this enticing series, “Hawkeye” arrives on screens in November.

The change of pace from the live action films to the colorfully animated narratives of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is what keeps the fans hooked and coming back. It’s the anticipation of ‘what else could possibly go wrong?’ that makes this show fascinating and all the more marvelous.
