After having won its previous four matches, volleyball fell for the first time since their two-week hiatus in late February with a 3-1 loss at Kansas State on Saturday.
The loss dropped the previously ranked No. 24 Bluejays out of the AVCA rankings for the first time this season.
The Wildcats took early advantage of the absence of Creighton’s two star outside hitters, sophomore Keeley Davis and junior Jaela Zimmerman, with a 25-15 first-set win.
“Missing two of our six rotation players put some kids on the court that haven’t played as much all year but they settled in into the second game,” coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth said.
In that second set, the Jays rebounded with a narrow 25-21 win to temporarily tie the match before the Wildcats snatched the lead back with a 25-21 win of their own in the third.
Led by Shelby Martin, who finished the night with 56 total assists, Kansas State finished with a score of 25-19 in the fourth.
Among those who stepped in the fill in at the outside hitter positions was sophomore defensive specialist Emily Bressman who– with 14 kills–nearly doubled her career total, all while playing at each of the six rotations throughout the match.
“Working on the little things emphasizes what we can do personally to better our game and what we can do to better the game for everyone around us,” Bressman said after the match on how she was able to step up.
Senior outside hitter Erica Kostelac also contributed with 14 kills and two aces.
Contributing to Bressman and Kostelac’s career days were sophomore setter Ally Van Eekeren’s 27 assists and freshman defensive specialist Ellie Bolton’s 14 digs.
Sporting an 8-3 record, the Bluejays will look to improve and bounce back, returning home next Saturday to close out the regular season against Iowa State.
“We want to work on our blocking and first contacts as a priority and also try to shore up some unforced errors,” said Booth.
Following the conclusion of the regular season, the Jays will remain in Omaha as the Big East Tournament is set to be held at Creighton’s own D.J. Sokol Arena Ryan Athletic Center April 2-3.
