Creighton volleyball finished off its nonconference schedule over the weekend with 3-0 match sweeps over Wichita State and Wyoming to win the Creighton Classic.
The Bluejays are 7-1 in their last eight matches, including two wins against top-15 teams.
No. 15 Creighton, 5-3, opened up the Creighton classic against 3-6 Wichita State on Friday evening in D.J. Sokol Arena.
The Shockers started out strong in the opening set, pulling out to a 7-5 lead over the Bluejays. A surge behind freshman outside hitter Keeley Davis saw the Jays go on a 9-1 run to take the lead in the first set 14- 8. This strong play continued to see the Jays take a double digit first set win 25-15.
Set two started out with a back and forth contest between the two teams to give the Shockers a 5-4 lead over the Jays. This lead was short lived, as the Jays took 10 of the next 13 points to take a 14-8 lead.
The Jays continued to extend their lead and took set two 25-17. The set was highlighted with a season-high 11 blocks by Creighton.
The Bluejays did not trail in the third set, winning 25-19 to take the match 3-0 over the Shockers.
Creighton faced off against Wyoming Saturday afternoon.
Set one went saw Creighton quickly open up a 10-2 lead over the Cowgirls. Senior middle blocker Megan Ballenger had five blocks in the first set to help propel the Jays to a 25-11 first set victory.
Set two was a back and forth battle between the Jays and Cowgirls with eight ties and four lead changes. Seven kills from Sophomore outside hitter Jaela Zimmerman was enough to give the Jays a 25-23 set victory and take a 2-0 lead over Wyoming.
The final set saw Creighton start with a 10-3 lead, from which they never trailed.
Creighton finished with a 25-19 victory to give them their second sweep of the weekend and send them into conference play 7-3.
Creighton plays their first conference game this Friday at 7 p.m. at Sokol Arena against 9-2 Villanova.
