Led by junior Nate Vontz, the Creighton men’s golf team finished in eighth place in the Big East Championship this week.
It was a strong showing for Vontz on all three days of the tournament. He shot an even par 72 on the first day, and then used six birdies on the final 11 holes of the second day to crack the top five with a score of 71.
He concluded the tournament with a 73 to finish tied for fifth. It was the Jays’ highest individual finish ever in the Big East Championship.
True freshman Charlie Zielinski also played well in his first Big East tournament, finishing in 15th place after posting scores of 73, 74 and 74.
Rounding out the rest of the squad were Zielinksi’s freshmen counterparts Jake Kluver and Jackson Thompson, who finished in 36th and 37th, respectively.
As a team the Jays found themselves in seventh place after the first day with a score of 299. However, a push by the Xavier Musketeers on the final two days of the tournament dropped the Jays to eighth place.
They finished with a combined score of 906, 11 shots behind Xavier and 18 shots ahead of ninth-place Georgetown.
The tournament concluded the Jays’ season.
