More than 1,000 kids eat, sleep and think basketball, soccer and volleyball over the summer at Creighton University.
The men’s basketball program hosts several camps. One camp can bring in roughly 200 or more kids looking to hone their skills. Creighton’s men’s soccer program brings in approximately 250 campers per summer camp session.
Coaches Bob Warming and Dana Altman are the two who assist in putting together the soccer and basketball camps. At these camps, the coaches get their current players to work with and watch all the campers.
Soccer player Bryan Hoie said he likes the camp experience.
“I love working with the little kids,” he said. “It’s a good thing to me because I’m giving back to the community. To see their faces at the end of each day and knowing that they learned something good brings a smile to my face and makes me feel good. I can also remember the times where I used to come to these camps.”
Basketball player Kaleb Korver said the camp experience is positive for everyone.
“I showed a camper a move that I thought he might like to use. The next day, I saw him play and he did the move. I was pretty pumped to see that,” he said.
Hoie said the camps have similar setups, no matter the sport.
“As the age increases, there are fewer fun games and more skill-building in preparation for real games they play against each other,” Hoie said.
