Billy Blues says ‘no’ to dining dollars

Each morning, as I entered the living room in my Davis Square apartment, I saw the construction of the Harper Center. Day by day, it took shape, and there was one thing for which I couldn’t wait: Billy Blues Alumni Grill.

Maybe it was that I would be 21 after it opened, or that I am a sports nut who loves bar food, but I couldn’t wait until the doors were finally opened.

I decided to get a Super Flex meal plan. I figured that meant I could spend my dining dollars at Billy Blues, like at Irma’s Bistro. I also knew there was no way I would be able to use those funds to pay for alcohol, but I assumed food at the bar and grill would be included.

How hard can it be to split the ticket – one for food and one for alcohol?

It must be pretty hard because Billy Blues will not accept my dining dollars.

So an on-campus dining option run by University Dining Services is really just a regular restaurant that happens to be a partner with our JayBucks program.

Sorry if I seem a little bitter, but as a poor college student, I enjoyed the idea that I could use part of my meal plan and save the money I’d spend at Buffalo Wild Wings or Indigo Joe’s since I’d get the same experience at Billy Blues.

I never expected Creighton to allow alcohol to be purchased using the meal plan. Frankly, it shouldn’t. But if you have a dining option on campus, a part of your meal plan, such as Dining Dollars, should be accepted to buy food.

I have succumbed to the temptation and eaten at Billy Blues. It is delicious. I asked the manager about accepting dining dollars. She told me that she asked and was told, “No.” In fact, she had to fight to get JayBucks accepted.

At the dedication ceremony, The Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J., said, “This building symbolizes Creighton’s promise to students, both current and future, that we will provide an excellent academic education, combined with extraordinary opportunities for spiritual, physical and social growth.”

I hoped that promise included burgers, pizza and wings at Billy Blues, without having to worry about another restaurant charge on my bank statement — I guess I was wrong.
