The mens’ soccer team defeated Portland 3-0 last night at Morrison Stadium in the Diadora Challenge. The win boosted the team to a 2-0-0 start to the season. Freshman Ethan Finlay scored his first career goal 40 minutes into the match to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead going into the second half.
Senior Andrei Gotsmanov blasted a spinning volley past the Pilots’ keeper for his second goal of the year. After defender Chris Schuler was fouled in the box, Hermann Trophy candidate Byron Dacy finished the awarded penalty kick to seal the win.
Rookie goalkeeper Brian Holt had a superb performance in goal. The sophomore recorded his first career shutout and kept the Pilots’ offense at bay. The midfield showed a solid defensive effort and managed to keep possession throughout the match.
The fourth-ranked Bluejays are looking to keep their undefeated streak going in the tournament. They face UC Riverside at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
