Creighton battled back after a loss to UAB to sweep Mississippi en route to a 2-1 finish at the Gamecock Invitational Friday and Saturday.
Sophomore Melanie Feldman was instrumental in the decisive second set, serving to tie it up at 14 and then to finish out the set 25-23. Seniors Amanda Cvejdlik and Carolyn Decker and junior Jessica Houts had 11 kills each to lead the Jays to a 25-13, 25-23, 25-20 victory over the Rebels.
Decker also had 11 kills in the Jays’ sweep of Jacksonville State to begin the tournament. JSU had no blocks or aces and recorded a -.112 hitting percentage, the lowest by any opponent in Creighton history. The Bluejays won 25-12, 25-15, 25-12 and hit .364 with three aces and 15.5 blocks.
Creighton met more of a resistance Friday night against UAB as they lost 19-25, 26-24, 25-22, 18-25, 14-16. There were 10 ties and three lead changes in the fifth set, in which Creighton’s three service errors proved decisive. The Jays finished the match with 69 kills, five aces, 87 digs and 12 blocks. Houts led the offense with 22 kills while setter Korie Lebeda recorded 62 assists.
The Jays’ 2-1 weekend put their record at 3-4 on the season. They return to action next weekend at the Ladyjack Invitiational where they take on Rice, Oklahoma and Stephen F. Austin.
