Challenging majors, befuddling calculus problems and perplexing philosophy readings plague every college student, and frequently it is just as difficult to complete an assignment as it is to find help with it.
Fortunately for Creighton students, the Center for Student Success & Retention provides a new service called The Study to provide scholars with academic assistance in a welcoming environment.
Providing services like one-on-one and drop-in tutoring as well as group study rooms, The Study, located in Harper 4066, can serve as an alternative to the library and several different resources for students.
Kate Linden, assistant director for Academic Initiatives, said The Study is one of the “best kept secrets” on campus and encouraged students to come into the office to set up a tutoring session, reserve a room for group work or use The Study’s broad variety of resources.
Some support services include help with issues like time management, extracurricular activities, career decisions, test-taking strategies, note-taking skills, procrastination and concentration. The Study offers assistance in virtually every academic respect save for paper-writing, which is primarily taken care of in the Writing Center in Creighton Hall.
Quiet study locations are always available, and their other resources are an asset to a wayward student. The Study also provides workshops for things like study skills improvement, such as the Finals Prep Workshop in the Skutt Student Center on Dec. 9.
Although The Study is rarely used most of the time, during periods with frequent tests it can get a little crazy.
“It was too crowded [when I went],” said Arts & Sciences freshman Jenna Bethke. “They need more tutors.”
Scheduling appointments or using The Study is as easy as stopping by the office. Staff are always there and willing to assist. Drop-in hours for chemistry are Sunday-Thursday from 6-9 p.m.; biology are Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and math labs are Sunday-Thursday from 5-9 p.m.
