Sweet treats just up the street

Whether it was Grandma’s warm, comforting pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving or mom’s mouth-watering brownies after a tough school day, homemade goodies never fail to satisfy those looking for a “sweet” twist in their day.

Sweet Magnolias Bakery, located off 40th Street in Omaha’s Cathedral district, offers enticing sweet treats that are baked with the freshest ingredients every morning. Its most popular pastries include the rich blueberry and cherry scones, the lightly glazed cinnamon rolls and the giant moist cupcakes. But don’t let the decadence fool you, these tempting treats are very affordable and yield a sense of familiarity in each delicious bite.

“My ultimate favorite treat is the red velvet cupcake,” Arts & Sciences junior Jenilynn Blair said. “They are melt-in-your-mouth soft and the cream cheese frosting hits the spot when someone is down in the dumps.”

The bakery has been open for about four years, with a change of ownership occurring about two years ago. Current owner Amy Chin said that she and her husband purchased the scrumptious southern-inspired recipes from the original owners.

Chin, who has limited formal culinary training, said the acquisition of the bakery provided a unique opportunity for her and her husband to run their own business. So far, Sweet Magnolias has attracted a faithful following of customers.

Chin said Sweet Magnolias caters to the various tastes of the Omaha community while still retaining some of the quaint charm of a small bakery. Hipsters, families, college students and local businesspeople can all indulge their cravings in one of the many delectable desserts.

As is common with small bakeries, Sweet Magnolias is only open for a few hours each day, and the pastries tend to sell out in the morning. Weekends also tend to be busier than weekdays.

“The greatest word of advice is to go as early as possible because the treats run out quickly,” Blair said.

The bakery has very limited seating as well, so it may be more convenient for customers to pick up the treats and take them home. However, it is precisely this “neighborhood bakery” atmosphere, coupled with the irresistible aroma that catches hold of you as you near the door, that prompts customers to seek refuge in the comfort and familiarity of these freshly-baked goods.
