Creighton and the CWS

When I was researching my article about the baseball team’s new home stadium at TD AMERITRADE Park (see the back page of this week’s issue), I was curious about how Creighton’s role as the host of the College World Series would change once the tournament moves to our backyard.

On one hand, Creighton’s duties at the event won’t change, head coach Ed Servais said. But since the Jays will be welcoming teams to their own home field, they might feel more like actual hosts.

But since the CWS will be held just down the street, it will certainly have an impact on our campus. The Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J. said that there is a committee starting up this summer to discuss the implications of the move.

Schlegel mentioned possibilities such as renting out rooms for gatherings, the lawn in front of Morrison Stadium for barbecues and Morrison Stadium itself to host movies or concerts. Being only a few blocks away, traffic regulation and parking are issues that are sure to come up as well.

The 2011 CWS is still a year and a half away, but it will take a lot of planning to make sure NoDo can pull the event off as smoothly as a neighborhood that’s been hosting it for 50 years.
