In this modern era, the definition of classic rock rests on the shoulders of bands such as The Beatles, Led Zepplin and Boston.
Unfortunately, Taddy Porter is trying to join that esteemed group. Taddy Porter is a new-age rock band formed in 2007 out of Stillwater, Okla. The band consists of four members: Andy Brewer (lead vocals/guitar), Joe Selby (lead guitar/backing vocals), Doug Jones (drums) and Kevin Jones (bass).
If I could give credit to this band for one thing, it would be this: They do not kid themselves into thinking they can match the feelings that the old greats gave us, but they describe themselves as “a mix between blues and classic rock.”
It is apparent that they are going for this idea as soon as you hear the first song, with its hard chords and depressing lyrics.
Their best song, “Shake Me,” was unimpressive, and reminded me of many Nickelback sound-alikes. But I will honestly say that their capabilities as musicians are exciting. Everything flowed well together. I am forced to argue that the style they are going for does not suit them.
This band has a lot of potential. They played a variety of different songs, and they were interesting to listen to, but again, they seem to be in the wrong field. Perhaps if they stuck more securely with the blues, or went for something more like the sounds of Green Day or Fall Out Boy, but I digress.
Those of you out there who like Eric Clapton and Kenny Wayne Shepherd will find this band exceptional, but for now, I’ll stick to my Beatles.
Taddy Porter is the opening act for Slash Wednesday night for the Stir Cove concert series at Harrah’s in Council Bluffs.
