CCSJ Fundraiser Overcomes Snowy Weather

Despite the snow, Creighton’s Center for Service and Justice (CCSJ) still managed to hold their Sam and Louie’s New York Pizza fundraiser on March 21. The fundraiser was held to raise money for the service trips organized by CCSJ.

β€œWe usually hold two fundraisers at Sam and Louie’s, one in the fall, and one in the winter. 15 percent of all the proceeds will go to the service trips in the upcoming fall,” CCSJ worker and Arts & Sciences sophomore Anne Ferguson said. “The proceeds help offset the cost as well as help with scholarships.”

Wendy Maliszewski, another worker in Center of Service and Justice, explained that CCSJ has a longstanding relationship with Sam and Louie’s. She said that the restaurant “would accept Jaybucks and works with the center to put on this event.”

β€œFor these events we ask the manager what date is convenient for him, he gives us some dates, and then the CCSJ committee decides,” Maliszewski said.

CCSJ did a good job in advertising the event in advance. Maliszweski says that they made sure that the event was heard on JAYNet News and Creighton Today.

Students also helped by making a page on Facebook about the event. The page advertised both pizza and pasta and talked about the special event would help over 200 people participate in the Service and Justice trip.

CCSJ could not foresee the weather problems that would shut down Creighton’s campus. Despite that the center decided to go through with the event.

She stated, β€œWe were not sure how bad the snow would be. We talked to Sam and Louie’s about it and asked if we could still hold the fundraiser and possible hold another one in the future, and they said yes.”

Strangely enough, Maliszewski believed that the snow was not a problem for the event; she said that Creighton might have even helped it because Brandeis closed Thursday night and increased the amount of students buying pizza.

She said, β€œWhen I went over and picked up my pizza, the place was packed, there were a lot. The snow wasn’t a detriment to Sam and Louie’s business that day.”

It can be certain that Sam and Louie’s will continue their relationship with CCSJ for the next couple of years. According to Ferguson, β€œthey do a good fundraiser.”
