The Art of Letting Go

There is a point in everyone’s life where one needs to let go.

Whether that is letting go of a bad grade, a mistake that was made, or even letting go of another person, it is something that is bound to happen.

As if being a young adult is not difficult enough, we are faced with obstacles that can sometimes result in a burden. There is no doubt that letting go is a challenging task that everyone eventually faces, but taking the time to understand the core features of moving on makes the process a whole lot easier to do.

Some people think that holding on proves great strength. In some cases this can be true. Holding on does show extreme strength and passion. However, in other cases, it takes a lot more strength and self-respect to let go.

Walking away from one’s past decisions, memories, or thoughts can be a difficult thing to do, but by surrounding oneself with the right people and activities, it does not have to be all that difficult.

One aspect that makes letting go seem so difficult is independence.

So many people want to do certain things independently; forgetting that sometimes it is important to allow others to assist you in moving away from something.

Getting out of a familiar setting β€” perhaps a dorm room β€” is much easier when you have a friend to meet, or a place to be.

Another element that makes letting go so difficult is change. Change can be good, but it is a scary thought. As humans, we become accustomed to routine and regularity. When that is disrupted, often times we have trouble reacting. It is never easy, but change does happen for a reason.

The hardest part about growing, is moving away from our comfort zones and trying something new.

A positive outlook suggests that change is a good thing and a necessary aspect of life. Change should be viewed from the perspective of a new door opening, rather than the idea of a door being slammed in your face.

The third component of letting go is taking the process one step at a time.

If a test goes poorly it can be tempting to say that the best solution is to try to forget about it, but that doesn’t always work. It is important to remember that it is okay to think about it. It is perfectly normal for the thought to hinder one’s mind.

The key is taking it day by day.

Taking it one step at a time will make the situation easier to take hold of, as opposed to expecting everything to change for the better in one day’s time.

Letting go is a necessary aspect of life that everyone must endure at one point or another. Taking the process day by day, surrounding yourself with people who love you and accepting change as it comes, are three things that can potentially assist one with letting go. Do not let an element of your past define you.

Life is beautiful, and there is so much of it left to live.
