A melodious musichemical manifestation mind boggles

The Melodious Musichemical Manifestation made its way back to Rigge 120 on Nov. 10.Β

This event,Β  incorporates famous songs from Elton John, Idina Menzel, Scott Joplin and Walt Disney Records. Hosted by the Department of Chemistry, the show consisted of 15 acts that each highlighted a different science experiment and included cameos of well-known characters, such as Kermit the Frog and the Pink Panther.Β

The Department of Chemistry has been working on this show for about two weeks. Students majoring in Chemistry were given the opportunity to sign up to participate in the event.Β

β€œI signed up to be in the chemistry show because I wanted to blow stuff up,” said junior Arts and Science student Luke Hallman. β€œI also thought it would be fun to be a part of this Creighton science tradition.”

This event started with three Chemistry majors in lab coats and goggles, but it has transformed into something much bigger than that; it has become a dramatic performance of simpler chemical experiments which creates a show involving music, costumes, dancing and – oh – chemistry. Simply put, if there were a Broadway musical about chemistry, this would be it.Β

Junior Arts and Science student Claire Knutson especially enjoyed the theatrics woven into the show.Β

β€œI’ve been to Chemistry shows in the past, but for me, this one took first place,” she said.Β

Knutson’s favorite act was β€œHeat Wave” which included students blowing up multiple large balloons with fire.Β

β€œIt was fun to watch. I might try it in my spare time,” she said.Β

After the show, they brought out more balloons and gave audience members the opportunity to blow one up themselves and see what the hype was all about.

There have been more than 54 performances in Creighton’s history, all celebrating National Chemistry Week.Β

If you were unable to attend the show, all of the videos from the show and chemical explanations behind each act can be found at the Melodious Musichemical Manifestation’s webpage.Β

The department is planning on having another show in the spring, said Hallman.Β
