Creighton celebrates Earth Month

Every year as the calendar turns to April, the world celebrates Earth Month, dedicating the month to protecting the planet.Β

On Monday, the Rev. Daniel Hendrickson, S.J., sent a memo to the students, staff, and faculty of Creighton University commemorating the beginning of Earth Month.Β

β€œAs we approach Earth Month, let us be ever mindful of the urgent need to do more to care for our common home, both as individuals and as a community.,” Hendrickson’s email statement said. β€œWhile there is much work to be done, I am thankful for the many ways our campus community has stepped forward over the years to advance a culture of sustainability.”

Creighton was not the only school to officially celebrate Earth Month, with schools around the country including the University of Iowa, UC Riverside, the University of Miami, and the University of Pittsburgh all celebrating the event.Β

Earth Month centers around Earth Day, a global holiday on April 22 which was founded in 1970.Β

Creighton will have an Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 23 in Elmwood Park at 11 a.m., which will include free food and drinks, live music, and an environmental expo.Β

β€œIn fidelity to our Jesuit, Catholic mission, sustainability is the responsibility of us all – not just a few select departments or individuals,” Hendrickson’s message said.Β

The month will end with the launch of Creighton’s new Sustainable Creighton Initiative on April 26.
