In the heart of downtown Omaha, Millwork Commons is home to a slew of local businesses and shops.
One of those, Heirloom Fine Foods Market & Café, is a self-proclaimed local “Bougie Bodega.” A combined market and food spot, Heirloom offers a variety of unique items and foods to Omaha locals.
When you walk into the market, you are greeted by a plastic skeleton in an old-fashioned bathtub surrounded by a variety of coffee beans — which encapsulates the quirkiness of the market.
If you want to do some light shopping for assorted little trinkets and one-of-a-kind snacks, Heirloom is your place. I especially recommend the little homemade pottery station if you are looking for a last-minute gift.
Heirloom claims on its website that its market items are an “inclusive range of artisanal Products,” and that customers can “champion change with every purchase and support brands not found elsewhere in Omaha.”
As far as food goes, I would describe the menu as an extremely upscale version of the fast-food chain Panera. Heirloom offers a variety of sandwiches, salads and weekly soup flavors, and they also offer breakfast.
Heirloom’s website proclaims that its food options are “excellent local artisanal food products and goods,” and that is obvious through its food quality and menu options.
The Caprese Sandwich was a standout on the menu, and I would recommend choosing the “make it a BLT” option for some added protein, or plain if you are looking for a good vegetarian option. All of the ingredients tasted fresh and knowing that everything is handmade-to-order definitely made for a good dining experience.
If you’re looking for another good and healthy option, the grilled chicken sandwich is another great option for a quick but fulfilling lunch.
While the prices can seem a little steep, I would say the food is worth the price –– everything tastes locally grown and fresh. If you’re a healthy eater, this place is definitely your new spot.
