Last Thursday, people from all over the community came to Creighton’s campus to celebrate the unveiling and dedication of a new statue.
Joining the many that stand around the campus is the Saint Jeanne Jugan statute, dedicated to the founder of the Little Sisters of the Poor.
Mother Marguerite McCarthy, who is from Saint Joseph’s Home of Palatine, in Illinois, unveiled the statue. Creighton was fortunate to have the Most Rev. Elden Francis Curtiss, Archbishop Emeritus, from the Archdiocese of Omaha. He provided the blessing over the statue.
The dedication stems from the amazing recovery of alumnus Edward Gatz, who, before he was healed, was diagnosed with lung cancer. The Creighton University Magazine published an Alumni News story in 2009 about Gatz, in which it stated that Fr. McGloin, whom the hall was named for, prayed to Jeanne Jugan.
Gatz did have one surgery, an extensive one that required most of the esophagus to be removed as well as some of the stomach. After this one, he opted for no further surgeries. Even though he was apprehensive when going to the doctor, he remained cancer free.
