Teaching old dogs new tricks

I realize that I may lose half of my readers right now by saying this, but I think we could learn a lot from the freshmen. See, as a senior, I have noticed a few things and I thought this was the best way to start off my first column in my last year at Creighton.

I remember being a freshman; excited for everything and it probably showed, sharing meals with random people that I hadn’t met yet, soaking up any seemingly fun opportunity I could, and most of all living with a free spirit.

Now I look at where we are as seniors, and I get a bit worried. Yes, there are times when we unwind, but as a generalization, we are worried about all things post-college, rather than enjoying the precious months we have left here together. I don’t know about the rest of you seniors, but I can’t believe that we’re almost done.

A friend who graduated from Creighton last year told me on my last first day of college, β€œEnjoy the heartbreakingly beautiful ride that it is.” I am taking this to heart. So freshmen, I look to you. This is what I’ve noticed.

First, I will try to take advantage of more on-campus opportunities. No, this does not mean EVERYTHING, nor will I be going out with my RA, but CSU and Res Life put on somany events that are free and fun.

If seniors would take better advantage of these FREE opportunities, maybe we won’t have to live in closet-sized apartments after graduation.

Second, I will try to meet as many new people as possible. For those of you who know me, I am not shy (far from it), but I want to be able to leave Creighton knowing that many names and faces have touched my heart. So many people have affected my life already, so why not add more to that list?

Finally, I know that it sounds like a quote that would be typed onto some serene picture and shared on Facebook, but with all of my heart, I want to enjoy the place that I am in because I know I am going to miss it like hell when it’s gone. Or rather, when we’re gone. Seniors, we have to enjoy each day here. Even when it seems like a drag, even when we’re just yearning for Friday to come. We’re going to miss those Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. And I know y’all are going to miss those Wednesdays.

Freshman I look to you for inspiration, but look to me for guidance; keep in mind that these years FLY by, so enjoy every second of it because I know will.
