Powered by a monster eightrun first inning, the Creighton Women’s Softball team defeated the Providence Friars 113 on March 23rd. The game was shortened due to the league’s mercy rule. The afternoon matchup between the Bluejays and the Friars was their BigEast home opener. Creighton used five hits, two walks and two errors to get themselves out to an early 81 lead. The eightrun inning is a season high for the lady Jays. At 1610 and 10 in the Big East, this win boosts their confidence heading in, after finishing 712 in the Big East in the 2014-15 season. Junior pitcher Sydnee Eck pitched all 5 innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits. The Bluejays committed just one error to Providence’s four errors. Junior infielder Anna O’Gorman went 2-4 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored. The 5’2 Omaha native had been very consistent for the Bluejays with a .235 batting average and 16 hits and nine RBI on the season. Joining her in having an outstanding game is catcher Blake Ringle. Ringle, also from Omaha, went 33 with one RBI. She has 14 RBI on the season. Jen Daro, another junior from Omaha, played a big part in helping the Bluejays be victorious. Daro went 24 at the plate, with 2 RBI’s. Daro is batting .324 on the season with 25 RBI’s. Alongside her, sophomore third base Tash Coffiel had herself a successful game. She went 23, with one RBI and one run scored. Coffiel is batting .388 on the season with 19 RBI and 14 runs scored. There were many positives to be taken away from this game. There were multiple players that contributed to the win that afternoon. Between the four players mentioned, they were responsible for 8 of the 11 runs scored in the game. The team showed their explosive firepower and if the Bluejays can continue to hit well at the plate, it will be a good season for the team.
