Creighton’s got talent, and while it isn’t the theme of the next hit reality program, CUASA is hoping it will be the next hit on campus.
Business junior Jamal Jackson, CUASA president, and Business junior Michael Beverly, CUASA treasurer, organized the group’s first ever talent show to offer students both free entertainment and a chance to showcase a special skill Thursday night in the Harper Center Ballroom.
“The case of the talent show was basically to show everyone on the Creighton campus that someone has a talent, what that someone can do and give that person the time to shine,” Beverly, said. “Sometimes you get to college and you lose that certain drive and all the things you used to be doing in high school. All that people know now are books.”
However, students are skeptical how talent shows would work in the college setting.
“I kind of feel like talent shows that are put on in the college level and even in high school get turned into jokes,” said Irieri Herndon, Arts & Sciences senior. “Mr. Deglman. One guy folded laundry for his talent. That’s kind of ridiculous.”
Acts in the talent show include a glow stick dancer, several singers, another dancer, an actor and even a hula hoop dancer. There are about eight performances.
Participants had to submit their talent to the CUASA executives, if approved, the participants were then asked to audition to ensure their act was in line with the values of both Creighton and CUASA.
“It wasn’t like ‘American Idol’,” Beverly said. “We weren’t going to say your talent was bad. But you’re representing yourself just as well as you’re representing CUASA.”
Beverly hopes to make the talent show an annual event.
