Jays win in record setting fashion

By the time the horn sounded on last night’s 1-0 Creighton win over Memphis (3-8-1), freshman goal keeper Brian Holt and the Jays defense had a new Creighton soccer record: 649:06 consecutive minutes of shutout soccer.

Holt, who only recorded one save the whole night, came into the game needing only 3:39 seconds for the new record. The Jays (8-1-1) out-shot the Tigers 18-3 and the score could have been worse than 1-0 as the Jays had plenty of chances to score in the second half, but couldn’t convert.

The game winner came in the 18th minute from junior Thomas Gjoesund, who was added to the starting lineup right before game time, He took a cross from freshman Ethan Finlay and put it in.

The shut out was the sixth in a row for the Jays, who now have held opponents scoreless in eight of 10 matches.

The Jays began the week first in the NCAA in save percentage and second in goals against average and shutout percentage, while ranked as high as second in some polls.

The tough defense will be put to the test again this weekend when high-flying Evansville comes to Morrison Stadium. The Purple Aces (7-3-1) lead the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring. Kickoff is set for 7pm as both teams open conference play.
