Training Day: representatives learn the ropes

The Creighton Students Union mission statement says it is “an organization dedicated to the service of the Creighton University student and the enhancement of the educational, social, and cultural environment on campus.”

This year the Board of Representatives includes 37 students from undergraduate, graduate and professional schools. Its mission is to represent the student body and provide a link between students and administrators. On Jan. 24, the representatives were trained on how to deal with this responsibility.

Arts & Sciences juniors Rajeev Anchan, Monet Schrodermier and Adam Hare and Business sophomore Kelly Nash were the executives that collaborated to run the training.

Hare said that the goal of the training is “to educate our representatives on the structure, practices and resources of our student government at Creighton.”

This is important because representatives gain a keener understanding of the legislative and governing practices of CSU. Trainers and trainees discussed student issues on campus and considered what CSU could do to continue improving students’ experiences.

Despite the importance of the training, participants were still able to have fun. Anchan directed a game of “CSU Family Feud” that helped generate discussion about topics ranging from school spirit to campus expansion.

An emphasis was placed on what representatives should do with issues raised by other students. CSU has a close relationship with the administration. Some of the members are able to have direct conversations with the president and vice presidents of the university.

One easy way for individual students to get involved is by e-mailing any concerns to [email protected].
