National Jesuit conference will come to campus

Former President Bill Clinton, NBA all-star Dwyane Wade, famous musician Bing Crosby and former Coca-Cola CEO Don Keogh are just a few of the hundreds of leaders who have graduated from Jesuit universities.

The National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference is designed to promote this kind of leadership from current students.

Creighton hosted the conference in 2002, and this year from July 8-12 Creighton will host it again.

The annual conference was started by a group of students at Regis University in 1997. Each year, universities submit bids for the honor of hosting the conference.

Creighton is the first university chosen to host it for a second time.

“Creighton was picked because we are in a time of expansion and growth,” said Jenna Vercillo, NJSLC coordinator and Arts & Sciences senior.

“We are a hidden gem of the Midwest and we are excited to showcase it.”

Students, faculty and administrators from all 28 Jesuit universities in the United States will be attending the conference.

NJSLC focuses on using student leadership to develop programs on campus such as student government, Greek life, residence life and more.

Most of the Creighton students attending will be Creighton Students Union and Freshman Leadership Program members, but if individuals are interested they can contact a CSU representative.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Discover, Develop and Deliver.” It will focus on helping students discover talents and leadership skills, develop and cultivate them, and then use them to benefit their campus and their community.

“The Jesuit values are part of everyday life on campus, so too will they be for conference attendees,” said Dillon Miskimins, NJSLC coordinator and Business junior. “These values will be highlighted as we explore our theme.”

Creighton is looking for volunteers to help out at the conference. If students are interested they can contact Mallory McGinnis at [email protected].
