What do you get when you take five talented Creighton students, a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll and a benefit concert? You get Push to Start’s CD release party.
Push to Start is a band made up of Arts & Sciences sophomores Colton Little (vocals), Nathan Hieb (drums), Evan Hansen and Gabe Pilla (guitar) and Business sophomore Matt Tucci (bass guitar).
The release party is being held at the Slowdown on Thursday, April 16 at 7 p.m.
Since meeting two and a half years ago playing in the Kiewit Hall neutral zone, Push to Start has gained a reputation and a fan base.
Coming together, each member had a different style, but after playing for a while they began to find a collective sound.
“It took a long time to define our style, but we agree on alternative rock with a little bit of pop,” Little said.
Defining themselves has been a large part of their growing careers and is reflected in the title of their new CD, “Definitions.” Hansen designed the cover with the help of the other band members.
“Each song is a different definition of the band,” Pilla said. “But they are all tied together with Colton’s voice.”
The band writes and performs
original songs.
“It all starts acoustically,” Little said. “One of the guitarists will come up with a riff, then the drummer makes up a beat and then the lyrics are added.”
The songs come together easily, Hieb said.
Push to Start has played at gigs at the Sokol in Omaha, Brat Stop in Chicago, a racetrack benefit in Council Bluffs and at the Relay for Life cancer benefit at Creighton.
“Performing is the coolest feeling in the world,” Hieb said.
“When people know your songs and everyone’s into it is the best part of performing,” Little said.
The opening bands are from across the country, including Within The Eddy, Beta Minus, Ceraboca and special guest Creighton sophomore Steve Winget. All of the openers have a different sound to appeal to everyone’s taste in music.
“The beauty of our style is we tie it all together,” Tucci said.
The after party starts after the concert and goes until 1 a.m.
There will be a DJ playing music and a chance for fans to meet and mingle with the band members.
Tickets can be purchased from any of the band members or from their table on the mall for $8 and $10 at the door.
All of the proceeds go to Youth Leadership Omaha to benefit underprivileged children and help prepare them to take a role in the Omaha community.
Students can come out to support their fellow Creighton students and support good causes: both releases of “Definitons” and Youth Leadership Omaha.
