Parents among the biggest fans

Even though the Creighton University baseball team only gets a fraction of the 17,000 people that pack the Qwest Center, that does not mean they do not have some of the most dedicated and enthusiastic fans on campus.

So who are these dedicated fans? One trip to the CU Sports Complex would show that the parents of the baseball players are some of the most dedicated fans around. Parents make incredible efforts to be at every home game and make a few road trips when possible.

The team has a large number of players from Omaha and surrounding areas, whose parents regularly attend games. However, Jim and Robin Swift, parents of Bluejay third-baseman Jimmy Swift come from outside the area to attend as many games as possible.

The Swift family has made it to nearly every game, which includes a road trip to Texas to see Jimmy hit his first career home run.

Swift was glad that he could share that special moment with his parents.

“They were there for my first career home run, and it did add to the excitement to be able to share that with them since they made the effort and traveled all the way down to Texas to watch me play,” Swift said.

The trip from Des Moines to Omaha takes a little over two hours, and while the number of games attended by the Swift family is very impressive, they are not the only Creighton baseball family that enjoys a trip to Omaha for a baseball game.

Last year, Michael Lam’s mother made the trip from Hawaii to Omaha for every home game.

It all must be worth it to see their boys play. The guys also enjoy having mom and dad in the stands; however, the trip is not all about baseball.

Swift enjoys a nice free meal with his parents whenever they are in Omaha.

“Just being able to go out and eat with them sometimes when I get the chance after the game,” Swift said. “It is always nice to be able to spend some time with them.”

Swift and his teammates appreciate the time and money their parents spend to come and watch them do what they love.

“I love to have my parents at the games. I really appreciate them taking the time to travel around and watch me play baseball,” Swift said.
