Witter leaves CU after two years

In the off-season of college basketball, many things are uncertain; however, there is one thing of which Creighton basketball followers can be sure: junior guard Cavel Witter will not be a part of next

year’s squad.

There are also rumors that sophomore center Kenton Walker will not return next year, but nothing is official yet.

Witter provided some electrifying moments for Jays fans including a 42 point outburst against Bradley and a game-winning three-point shot against Rhode Island in the first round of the 2008 National Invitational Tournament.

Witter said the decision for him to leave was mainly mutual, but he is looking for a place where he can play a larger role.

“I am a talented player capable of doing much more. I was tired of settling for less than what I am,” Witter said.

Sophomore forward Casey Harriman mentioned some things he will miss about Witter next year.

“Off the court, he is a funny person, always joking around, so he is fun to be around,” Harriman said. “On the court, he was a large part in our offense by scoring, penetrating [the defense] and hitting the open man.”

Witter was the team’s fifth-leading scorer, and was second on the team in assists and free throw percentage. Creighton will surely miss Witter, and it appears Witter will also miss Creighton. Witter said the decision to leave was not an easy one.

“[It] wasn’t easy because I felt like I made a connection with people and build great relationships with friends, but it comes down what is best for me,” Witter said.

Witter is currently unsure of where he will play next year, but mentioned that he is open to different Division I or II programs.

“I just want to go somewhere that is going let Cavel be Cavel, and where I can see myself the most successful in the team frame.”

Regardless of the fact that Witter is leaving, his teammates still remember him in a positive light. Harriman was able to share a special moment with Witter this year during a game at Missouri State where the two of them worked together to lead the Jays to victory.

“One of my favorite memories with Cavel is when we played Missouri State,” Harriman said. “We were losing, and he took control of the game by penetrating their defense and hitting me for three threes. Then he ended up scoring to get us back in the lead to win

the game.”

While many rumors have surfaced about Witter’s departure, he said he is yet to hear one that is entirely true. Regardless of what has been said about Witter, he feels that everything will be all right.

“Some people will remember me for my bad and say I wasn’t a good point guard and I don’t do this, or I need to do this–and that’s fine. I have no problem with that. I actually like it. I will use this as motivation and keep God on my side, and I will be fine,” Witter said.

Witter had one more thing to say:

“I just want to thank some of the fans for supporting me no matter what through my miscues and my great moments. They made my experience at Creighton great.”
