15 things we wish we knew freshman year

We seniors who were too irresponsible to finish the core when we should have, are meeting more freshman now than when we were freshmen.

While so many of these students are cool as can be, we still think it’s worth offering some advice to the newest, largest class.

1. You’re going to get a bad grade. Deal with it.

2. Adapt. Every professor is different, but Creighton hires the best for a reason. Whether the professor is tough grader or unorthodox, he or she knows more than you do, and you have to be able roll with any professor. Who do you think is going to write you recommendations?

3. Use office hours. Professors want to get to know you, and it always ends up working in your favor.

4. Don’t get sent to C.A.R.E. That will follow you throughout college and make your parents furious that they sent you to such an expensive school just to party.

5. You don’t know everything. You may have been the smartest student in your high school, but you’re not in high school anymore. You’re here to learn, not to be a know-it-all.

6. Don’t have your whole college career planned out. As you progress, you’ll meet tons of former-pre whatevers. Take ballet, scuba diving or pottery (or journalism!) or anything that you haven’t tried before.

7. Stalk a Jesuit. They are what make Creighton what it is. So, whether or not you have a Jesuit as a professor, strike up a conversation in the hallway or stop by one of their offices. It just might earn you a ride on the golden elevator.

8. Go everywhere and do everything (within reason). Whether it’s a date party, a CSU town hall meeting, a protest or a barbecue, just show up. You’ll always end up meeting someone new or getting a cool story out of it. Don’t just go to the Qwest for men’s basketball, but women’s basketball, baseball, dodgeball, whatever.

9. Don’t overcommit yourself. Not to disregaurd the above advice, but while it’s fun to join every club, by senior year you will be burnt out.

10. Don’t have your boyfriend or girlfriend spend the night. Your roommate might say it’s cool, but it’s not. It’s annoying. For that matter, don’t have your boyfriend or girlfriend in your room all the time. That’s just as bad.

11. Don’t go home on the weekends. Make new friends. Hang out with your roommate. Expand your horizons.

12. Don’t assume everyone thinks like you. They don’t. So many people at Creighton have different ideas, political views and experiences. Just because you have different ideas and read different books doesn’t make you any more or less smart that your classmates.

13. Your adviser knows best. It’s true. They have been in the game for a long time and are looking out for you.

14. Ditch Cabo. Go on a service trip over vacation and meet people from every corner of campus and make some close friends.

15. Don’t be afraid to change. You won’t be the same person when you graduate as you are now, and that’s more than OK. That is ideal.
